The Battle of Grunwald or 1st Battle of Tannenberg was fought on July 15, 1410, during the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War. The alliance of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, led respectively by King Władysław Jagiełło and Grand Witold, decisively defeated the Teutonic Knights. The colored picture on the front of the medal is a fragment of Jan Matejko's famous painting of the battle executed using an advanced pad printing technique, while the back depicts a bust image of the artist Jan Matejko (1838-1893).
