Thought to be a mutant clone of the pinot noir variety, it normally has a grayish-blue fruit, hence “gris,” which is French for gray. Tropical aromas of kiwi, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon waft up on the first sip leading to a fresh, minerally texture, offering crisp flavors of celery, grapefruit and lime on the palate. It pairs especially well with seared scallops in a Pinot Gris butter sauce, and equally well with prawns, oysters, grilled lobster, or cracked crab.
